Type Is Design @ RailsConf 2021
This is the presentation from the all-remote RailsConf 2021. It's effectively the entire Type module from the DeveloperUX Master Course.
The written word is the medium through which most information exchanges hands in the tools we build. Digital letterforms can help or hinder the ability for people to communicate and understand. We'll work through some typographic principles and then apply them to the web with HTML and CSS for implementation. We'll look at some of the newer OpenType features and touch on the future of digital type, variable fonts, and more, including:
- A brief history of everything typographic
- The basic rules of type
- Choosing & pairing fonts
- Bringing fonts into Rails
- OpenType for teh web
- Baseline grids
- Type + UX
- Paragraph & Character Styles
- Typographic baselines
- Javascript hacks
- and A look to the future...
Take a seat and get ready for all sorts of type and CSS goodness, and let me know what questions you have, as this is a very high-level view of a very deep dive topic. Enjoy!
